Recruitment team spotlight – Gary Loy

The following blog is the second in a series of posts to introduce members of Military Sealift Command’s dedicated recruitment team, which is responsible for recruiting and retaining the command’s civil service mariner workforce. This post focuses on an interview with Gary Loy, a member of the field recruitment team.

How long have you worked with the command?

I started in October 2012, so it’s been about 11 months.  It doesn’t seem that long because I really enjoy what I do and the people I work with.

What is the best part of working with the MSC field recruitment team?

The professionalism, camaraderie and teamwork.  MSC’s field recruitment team works for team success, not individual gain. It is reassuring to know that we all work towards the common goal – matching the right people to the needs of the command. Whether it’s helping educate job seekers at an MSC-hosted career fair, a nationally sponsored job fair, or outreach into the veteran community about exciting career opportunities – it helps to continue to fulfill our purpose of service to country.

How do you apply your past skills and experiences to helping current CIVMARs and prospective MSC employees?

With 30 years of Navy at-sea experience, I can relate to what life is like aboard ship and working on the water. This knowledge helps me to not only understand what the CIVMARs deal with, but to be able communicate this life to prospective MSC employees.  As I tell them all the time, you don’t need to sugar coat a sweet thing. Life at sea is hard, but very rewarding!

What is the most rewarding part of your job?

The most rewarding part of my job is when that call comes in from a prospect that I have been working with and they say they landed the job they were looking for.  That’s when I know that I have been effective at not only meeting the command’s needs for talented people, but also helping someone find a career to meet their goals as well.

You can always reach out to our team by attending a job fair or calling the CIVMAR Support Center at 866-562-7672. You can also email or post a message on MSC’s Facebook page.
