A career at sea with MSC: What you need to know

We get asked a lot of questions on our Facebook page about open civil service mariner positions and the application process. If you have visited our website recently you may have noticed there are currently no open positions. This is not due to the government shutdown or current fiscal environment – we simply do not have any positions open at this time.

How will I know when positions open? There are two ways to find out when positions are posted to the website. One, you can check the website every day or, two, you can subscribe to our RSS feed. This will notify you when positions are posted to the website. This can be done by clicking the icon on the front page of the website, in the “Now Hiring” block in the middle of the page. If you have already submitted an Information Request Form (IRF) expressing an interest in a specific position we will notify you via email when that position opens. If you have not already completed an IRF click here for our Start The Process page.

How long will I have to apply when the position I am interested in opens?  Some positions are posted as “open continuously, with periodic cut-offs” and some only stay open for a limited amount of time, so be sure to check when the position you are waiting for opens. If the position you are interested in is only open for a specified time period be sure to submit your application prior to the closing deadline.

What documents do I need to have ready when the position I am interested in opens? To apply you must possess a valid, current Transportation Worker Identification Credential card (TWIC), a current U.S. Coast Guard issued Merchant Mariner’s Credential (MMC) and a current U.S. Passport. You must also meet MSC’s conditions of employment along with the specific minimum employment requirements (listed in the job announcement) of the position you are seeking.

To meet with a recruiter in person you can attend one of our many job fairs, or you can speak to a recruiter by calling the CIVMAR Support Center at 866-562-7672. You can also post a message to our Facebook page.
