Jobs at MSC: The CIVMAR interview process

Getting hired as a civil service mariner (CIVMAR) with Military Sealift Command is an exciting process. We have made great strides in the past year to streamline this process for applicants. Until recently, MSC has not conducted interviews for CIVMAR positions. However, in the last two months, this has changed. Please read on to learn what you can expect with this new process if you are interested in a CIVMAR position.

Applicants, based upon initial review, may be eligible for an interview. If you are, the CIVMAR Support Center will contact you to identify a date and time for this interview. Once confirmed it will be up to you to arrive or sign into the system for the interview as scheduled.

Here are 5 things to keep in mind if selected for an interview.

Be timely. Arrive early for your interview.

Come to your interview prepared. Even if it is using web-based technology, treat it like an interview where you are sitting across the desk from someone.

  1. Be in a quiet place where you will be able to hear the questions asked of you.
  2. Limit external distractions – don’t have your dog sitting next to you trying to play fetch.
  3. Be prepared to present yourself in a professional manner.
  4. Know what position you are interviewing for. Have a copy of your application to reference throughout the interview to build that connection with your interviewer.

Be prepared to talk about yourself. What should MSC know that will help them make a determination that you are the right person for the job? Prepare and be comfortable talking about your character and work experiences that demonstrate your ability to be a good employee.

Ask questions. Feel comfortable asking questions that you have about the position or the hiring process. We welcome those.

Relax. Interviews can be intimidating, but just remember to breathe and be yourself, the purpose is to get to know you.

So, good luck if you are selected for an interview. We hope these tips are helpful. And just remember do not be discouraged when at the end of the interview you do not receive a job offer. No one will.

You will be contacted following the interview if you have been selected for employment. The required employment pre-screening process will follow after receiving a tentative offer. This will include a security screening, drug check and medical evaluation.
