Veterans Day

From Commander, Military Sealift Command

Veterans Day

On Nov. 11 we mark a special day of remembrance where we honor and praise the millions of selfless men and women who have served our nation in the armed forces.

Veterans Day, celebrated on Nov. 11 each year, is steeped in our nation’s history. Originally called Armistice Day marking the end of major hostilities in World War I, the observance was broadened to recognize all veterans of military service, and renamed Veterans Day in 1954.

Many of our MSC teammates are veterans, and most have a family member or close friend who served in the military. On this most auspicious of days, we honor their service and recognize the contributions they have made to our nation, and gratefully say, “thank you.”

It is also important to thank our veterans’ families. Military service is a significant family commitment, and involves shared sacrifice on the part of our parents, spouses, siblings, and children.  The families of our veterans made an important contribution, and we know that supportive families are a major factor in keeping our military strong and ready.

As we celebrate Veterans Day, please seek out and extend sincere appreciation to all veterans, thanking them for their service and commitment to our nation.

United We Sail,

Rear Adm. Dee L. Mewbourne, USN

Commander, Military Sealift Command
