All-Hands Call Highlights

Tomorrow U.S. Army LTG Stephen R. Lyons will be promoted to General and relieve U.S. Air Force Gen. Darren W. McDew as the Commander, U.S. Transportation Command. LTG Lyons, the Joint Staff Director for Logistics (J4), previously served as the Deputy Commander at U.S. Transportation Command. We welcome LTG Lyons and look forward to demonstrating to him the value and professionalism of our NAVTRANS team and the importance of our mission to empower global warfighting capabilities.

Last week at our headquarters all-hands call we said goodbye to Gen. McDew and thanked him for his leadership, support, and service to our nation.

During his remarks, and the question and answer period, he addressed areas we must focus on so that we are ready, today and in the future, to answer our nation’s call and support the joint warfighter. Some of the highlights of this discussion include:

– We must stay focused on the readiness of our ships and mariners;

– We have an important role to play in educating others, both within and outside the Department of Defense, about the importance of sealift and our civilian mariner force to our national defense strategy;

– Similar to U.S. Transportation Command, MSC supports the joint warfighter and has global responsibilities;

– It is essential that we continue to cultivate and maximize our relationships with the “fourth component,” our industry partners;

– Innovation and process improvement must be on our radar, in areas like artificial intelligence and the Transportation Management System;

– Continue to focus on cyber, at work and in personal lives; the threat is real and persistent; and

– Our people are the key enabler to accomplish our mission; we must continue to acquire, value and develop a diverse qualified workforce.

We also presented awards and recognition to MSC staff:

– Individual achievement recognition;

– Civilians of the quarter;

– 35-, 30-, 15-, and 10-year federal service recognition;

– “Curve Bender” superior performance awards; and

– DoD Performance Management and Appraisal Program roll-out and training awards.

I’ll close by extending my personal gratitude to all award recipients for your hard work and contributions to MSC.

Thanks to the entire MSC team for the work you do each day and your service to our nation!

United We Sail,

Rear Adm. Dee L. Mewbourne, USN

Commander, Military Sealift Command
