JOBS AT MSC: is your application ready to submit?

We receive a variety of questions every week about what makes an employment application package incomplete. Only complete application packages are considered for employment.The following post includes tips to help YOU make sure your application is complete!

Approximately 70% of all application packages received by the CIVMAR Support Center (CSC) are rated incomplete every month.  

  • Did you know that application packages need to be in a specific order when submitted? It’s true; every job opportunity announcement (JOA) has a section called “How to Apply”. This is a very important section of the JOA, because it outlines the specific order of requirements for your application package.. Last month alone more than 20% of all application packages received were in the wrong order.
  • Have you answered all the questions? On both the Optional Application for Federal Employment (OF-612) and the Declaration for Federal Employment (OF-306) it’s important to carefully review your completed form to make sure that you have answered all the questions and provided additional information/explanations where required. Most importantly, make sure you sign and date your application. Last month 30% of all applications received were either not signed/dated or additional information/explanations wasn’t included.
  • Are the copies included clear and easy to read? This is just as important as making sure you have included them in the first place. For example, if the copy of your Merchant Mariner’s Credential (MMC) is unclear your application package is incomplete. Last month almost 20% of the application packages received had missing or unclear copies of required documents.
  • What if I have already submitted my application? What can be done to make it complete? If your application package has been received by the CSC, you’ll be contacted regarding any missing information. It’s critical that you respond to these calls/emails and supply the missing data.
  • Is there a time limit to supply missing application data? Yes. When you are contacted by the CSC they’ll let you know how much time you have to supply/resubmit the missing information.
