Independence Day

From Commander, Military Sealift Command

Independence Day

On July 4 we celebrate our nation’s independence, achieved 242 years ago with the signing of the Declaration of Independence and a day former president John Adams said “ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, bells, and illuminations from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever more.”

For many of us, this holiday period will be an opportunity to enjoy a break from routine to spend time with family and friends at home, outdoors, or on the road. I ask that while participating in the patriotic events, you pause and take a moment to remember the many courageous and principled men and women who have served and sacrificed throughout our nation’s history to preserve and protect our liberties.

The founders gave us a framework upon which successive generations have advanced the cause of freedom. We too, are called upon to make real and meaningful contributions to society and our democratic institutions.

I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to our staff and DoD mariners, and their families, as each of you are a significant and valuable contributor to the MSC team. Whether providing on-time logistics, strategic sealift, or specialized mission support, your voluntary service ensures all Americans continue to enjoy life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

As you gather with friends and family over the holiday, continue to remain vigilant while enjoying the summer season. Focus on the basics: have a plan, begin all travel well-rested, anticipate delays, and remain alert. Return safe and refreshed. In everything you do, remember we are a team, and teammates take care of each other.

I wish you and your families a very happy Independence Day.

United We Sail,

Rear Adm. Dee L. Mewbourne, USN

Commander, Military Sealift Command
